There’s something undeniably magical about Christmas proposals — especially when they happen under glowing holiday lights in one of Louisiana’s most iconic locations. This one was extra special for me because the groom-to-be, Dylan, is actually my brother. Not only did I get to witness this unforgettable moment, but I also had the honor of photographing it as a professional photographer based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
If you’re dreaming of a surprise holiday proposal in New Orleans, this story is proof that timing, planning, and a little holiday chaos can create absolute magic.
The Plan: A Secret Proposal at Celebration in the Oaks
Dylan had been planning this proposal for weeks and chose the perfect setting — Celebration in the Oaks at City Park in New Orleans. Known for its dazzling Christmas light displays, romantic pathways, and festive atmosphere, it’s one of the most popular spots for holiday proposals in Louisiana.
The biggest challenge? Keeping Yvette completely unaware.
To avoid suspicion, I brought my camera along and told her I just wanted to “take photos of all the pretty lights.” We made it a casual photo walk through the park, stopping at multiple displays so it felt natural. The goal was simple: enjoy the experience, take lots of photos, and make sure Yvette never suspected what was about to happen.
Walking Through the Light Show Without Raising Suspicion
We wandered through Celebration in the Oaks, snapping photos along the way so Yvette wouldn’t think anything unusual was happening. Every stop was intentional — each photo session helped sell the idea that this was just a fun night out with Christmas lights and a photographer tagging along.
As closing time got closer, the pressure was on.
At one point, Yvette became completely mesmerized by the 12 Yats of Christmas display. While it was adorable to watch her enjoy it, Dylan and I were silently panicking, trying to gently guide her away without giving anything away.
The Perfect Proposal Spot: Christmas Light Arches in City Park
Dylan finally made the call — it was time.
He led Yvette into the garden area where there’s a long, wide pathway lined with trimmed hedges and towering arches of green Christmas lights stretching down the aisle. It felt cinematic. The glowing arches created the perfect romantic tunnel of light.
Right there, under the Christmas lights at City Park, Dylan dropped to one knee.
Yvette had absolutely no idea what was coming — and her reaction was priceless. Pure shock, joy, and happy tears filled the moment. As a Baton Rouge proposal photographer, these are the moments I live for — real emotion, raw reactions, and once-in-a-lifetime memories.
Racing Against the Lights (Literally)
Here’s the part that still makes me laugh.
About four minutes after the proposal, the park lights started shutting down. The arch they were standing under actually went out halfway through our photo session. We quickly shifted to the still-lit side of the arch and kept shooting as fast as possible.
Just moments later, park employees started ushering everyone out — but not before we squeezed in even more engagement photos on our walk toward the exit.
It turned into a hilarious, chaotic, and unforgettable end to an already perfect proposal night.

Capturing Surprise Proposals in Baton Rouge & New Orleans
As a professional photographer based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, I frequently travel to New Orleans for proposals, engagements, and weddings. Surprise proposals are some of my favorite sessions because they’re filled with genuine emotion and unforgettable reactions.
Whether you’re planning a Christmas proposal, engagement session, or surprise moment, having a photographer who can help you plan discreetly and capture everything seamlessly makes all the difference.
Congratulations Dylan & Yvette!
Watching my brother propose to Yvette under Christmas lights in City Park was something I’ll never forget. Their story is a reminder that sometimes the most magical moments happen when things don’t go perfectly — when lights shut off, when you’re rushing to beat closing time, and when love takes center stage.
Congratulations to Dylan and Yvette on the start of your forever.
